My oldest daughter has had a guy stalking her for 7 yrs literally a couple years after high school. She’s getting married to my grandson’s dad and they’ve been together eight years so he’s been there from the beginning of all of this starting and at first he believed that she was out there in the streets doing all these things this guy was saying. I told him this dude never has any photos of her doing anything no photos of them together. He’ll go away a couple of months then he’s back. I think the longest he disappeared was nine months and then he came back. The last time he sent something to her sister and I don’t even know how he got her phone number, but I don’t think he knows it’s her sister. He thinks she just a girl friend Because he sent her a video from three years ago and it’s been edited her and her sisters were all at a party dancing together, but in this video, she’s dancing with a guy, but you can’t see the guy face. All of them were there together, so they know that there was no guy dancing. They were dancing together. My daughter never posted anything and it was the sister who had the video. But he has a snippet of the video and somehow he put some dude with no face in it dancing behind her. Her sister lives in a whole otherstate and has never been here. Like we know the original video was 3 yrs ago and there’s no guy in it just the girls. She stays armed with her concealed weapon She does weapon training. She’s always aware of her surroundings and it’s just crazy that it’s been going on this long. Police can’t do anything because she can’t prove exactly who it is and even if she could, she has prove that they’re the ones sending all the messages and getting the numbers

JP's explanation works but only if we consider a couple things (and I happen to think these things are not only pragmatic but essential). One, we can easily argue that the opposite of joy is depression. So, we want to avoid depression and thusly seek joy. But we never really ask if that's the right metric or what joy actually is, because many things that are harmful are also temporarily (or longitudinally) joyful. Take drugs, for example. People love them despite them often causing torment. Similarly, (and secondarily), we associate responsibility with something less joyful or maybe even painful. And this seems like where JP is really getting at, because if the sense of duty is associated with negativity and hedonic activity is only joyful, we can quickly and without realization lose purpose and meaning. If we touch on grounds of nihilism and associate that with positivity, we really risk losing ourselves. In this case, the largest of things can lose meaning and since those circumstances are an extension of us, we lose meaning with them. This is catastrophic for a person seeking to remove themselves from the muck of depression. Rather, it is critical that they have the ability to see even the smallest of activities can direct their ability to slowly remove themselves from the muck. This is why goal-oriented behavior is critical. We live in such a reductionistic world whereby we (professionally and culturally) focus on (and pedestalize) understanding the amygdalic response to stimuli that we have foregone the ability to reason these things out properly. I enjoyed your discussion of mild-severe depression and the efficacy of medication and wish that more in the field had the wisdom to not just prescribe based on presentation alone. One fault I have with psychiatry is that, generally speaking, etiology has been replaced with symptomology for the sake of time, litigation avoidance, huge caseloads, etc., but this has been at the cost of people's lives. People have been on benzos for years, for example. What EBP has ever suggested 20 years of benzo dependence is good when we learn the exact opposite in our education? Meanwhile, we have diploma mills providing people with pieces of paper diagnosing and providing therapy when some of the best therapy is merely listening and the best diagnosis is a v-code?
